Once you have decided on a school, parents and caregivers are encouraged to visit the school to complete an enrolment form before the child’s first day. To enable schools to plan classes it is best to enrol your child soon after their 4th birthday. All children must attend school from their 6th birthday.
What to tell your child’s class teacher if it is not on the enrolment form:
- discuss any special health needs and what to do eg allergies, hearing or vision concerns, does your child need to wear glasses, is there a child in the class they already know? If there is anything else you think may be helpful, let the teacher know
- after school plans, who will pick your child up or will they be attending the after school programme?
Ideas on what to ask your child’s teacher:
- do you welcome parent help in the classroom? How can I help?
- ask for a copy of the class timetable so you can see what happens at what time each day. For some parents it’s nice to know what your child is doing during the day and it’s a good reminder of what day your child goes to the library, swims or has Physical Education
- what can I be doing at home to support my child’s learning?
Regularly check your child’s book bag or school bag for notices of upcoming events.
