Types of schools

COMPOSITE/AREA – Schools which are based in rural areas combining primary, intermediate and secondary schooling at the one location.

CONTRIBUTING – Years 1-6 (ages 5-11)
FULL PRIMARY – Years 1-8 (ages 5-13)

INTEGRATED- Integrated schools teach the New Zealand Curriculum but keep their own special character which is usually a philosophical belief or religious belief, as part of their programme. They are part of the state system. Integrated schools receive the same government funding for each student as state schools but their buildings and land are privately owned so they charge attendance fees to meet the property costs.

PRIVATE – Independent schools are also called private schools. They are privately owned and operated and require students to pay tuition fees. Private schools are governed by independent boards but must meet certain standards in order to be registered. They do not have to follow the New Zealand Curriculum but must follow a learning programme of at least the same quality.

HOME SCHOOL – Also called home education or home based learning is the education of children at home usually by parents or by tutors. It is an option available to all parents in New Zealand provided they meet the criteria set by the Ministry of Education. Extensive resources and help are available from the Ministry of Education.

CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL – Provides distance education for non-resident pupils.
Special Schools – Are schools that provide specialist education or support for students with specific physical, behaviour, sensory or intellectual needs.
